The VoiceMail system described above is a kind of Computer-Telephone Integration, or CTI. With the same hardware, we can also do Interactive Voice Response and Audio Text. IVR is where callers are greeted by an automated system which can access information from a computer database and read it to callers. The system tells callers to dial numbers on their telephone keypad and, using these numbers, the system looks up information. It can also record information keyed in by the caller to a file, thus updating a database. Audio Text is similar in that callers hear a sequence of prerecorded voice messages, such as directions to a location. We can build sophisticated Audio Text systems, such as an automated HELP system, with many levels and menu options.

Other kinds of CTI require additional hardware and software. For example Call Accounting allows you to record information about outgoing calls in a computer database. Use this information to track expenses by customer, employee, dialed destination, type of call and length of call among others. This information can be used to bill customers for phone usage (Hotels) or to let management see how employees are spending their time.

IP Telephony is another CTI application that uses additional hardware and software. With this cutting-edge technology you can send voice traffic over a computer data network, usually at no extra charge. This is very handy for companies with multiple locations that are too far apart for free calling. Instead of paying for long-distance charges for interoffice calls, simply route that traffic over the Internet.
